The court in Utrecht ruled Wednesday that by helping users download copyright material, such as films, music and computer games, Mininova was inciting people to breach that copyright and profiting from it.
Mininova's argument that it couldn't identify copyright material was rejected. The court concluded that the vast majority of commercially produced music, film, TV series and games could be assumed to be covered by copyright.
The site's take-down policy for removing links in response to complaints from copyright holders was also ruled inadequate.
Mininova, which is based in the Netherlands, has three months to lodge an appeal.
