Producers scuttle 'Busker Alley'
Show falls off track due to tragic developments

The show, with songs by Richard and Robert Sherman (“Mary Poppins,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”), has fallen off track due to a combination of developments, including the 2007 death of book writer AJ Carothers and the worsening health of one of the Sherman brothers.
“We will be returning all of the money to our investors and release all of our sponsors from their obligations,” the producers said in a joint statement. Producing team includes Margot Astrachan, Robert R. Blume, Heather Duke, Joanna Kerry, Kristine Lewis and Jamie Fox.
Jim Dale had been attached to star in show, with Tony Walton onboard to helm.
Based on the 1938 feature “St. Martin’s Lane,” “Busker Alley” centers on a London street performer who takes a young woman under his wing.
Musical had played a pre-Broadway tour starring Tommy Tune in 1995. When Tune broke his foot performing on that tour, the production’s Gotham ambitions were derailed.
