Lucas to honor Lasseter at Venice

Director to hand Golden Lion to Pixar guru

George Lucas has been recruited by the Venice Film Festival to present the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement to John Lasseter and the directors of the Disney/Pixar team.

Lucas, who will make the trek to the Lido for the first time, is being hailed by the fest as “a leader in Hollywood’s digital revolution.”

Lucas will lionize Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich in a ceremony at the Palazzo del Cinema’s Sala Grande on Sept. 6.

Before Pixar’s inception in 1986, Lasseter worked in the graphics group of the computer division at Lucas’ Lucasfilm, where he designed the figure of the glass knight for 1985’s “Young Sherlock Holmes.” It was the first character made by computer for a live-action film.

Venice’s Disney/Pixar tribute will include the world preems of the 3-D versions of “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2,” as well as the world bow of a 10-minute clip of the newest Disney theatrical release, “The Princess and the Frog” -- Disney’s return to hand-drawn animation -- plus a sneak peek from “Toy Story 3.”

On Sept. 7 Lasseter and the team will hold a master class dedicated to the Disney/Pixar filmmaking process and a panel discussion for young Italian and European animators on their careers and personal influences.

The Venice fest runs Sept. 2-12.
