'Stitch!' takes primetime slot in Japan

Disney, the Madhouse team on animated series

TOKYO -- The TV Asahi network has skedded "Stitch!," a toon based on the Disney animated feature "Lilo and Stitch," in a primetime slot, starting in October.

This move flies in the face of declining ratings for toons in Japanese primetime and late night. It is also a rare skedding for U.S.-originated content, toons or otherwise, since primetime in Japan has been totally dominated by local content for decades. The toon will air from 7 p.m. on Tuesdays on TV Asahi.

"Stitch!" whose full title is "Stitch! Itazura Alien no Daiboken" (Stitch! The Big Adventures of a Mischievous Alien), is something of a hybrid, since it is produced for the Japanese market in a collaboration between Disney and the Madhouse studio.

Although based on the original 2002 U.S. toon feature and subsequent TV toon, the show is set on a fictional island in the Okinawa group, with new characters not in the American versions.

The first "Stitch!" show aired on the smaller TV Tokyo net for 25 episodes starting in October 2008 and concluding in March 2009. It is currently being broadcast on the Disney Channel.
