Chris Rock, Sam Rockwell and Zoe Kazan are all said to be eyeing roles in the play. Candidates for the fourth thesp slot remain a question mark.
The production, opening in March at a Rialto theater to be determined, is helmed by John Crowley (McDonagh's "The Pillowman"), who will come to the show fresh from directing the fall staging of "A Steady Rain" starring Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman. Robert Fox, producer of starry Tony winner "God of Carnage," produces.
"Behanding" would rep a high-profile Broadway debut for multihyphenate Rock. The show would also be Rockwell's first Rialto credit in a full production (following stints in a few editions of "The 24 Hour Plays"), while Kazan was last on Broadway in the fall revival of "The Seagull."
Show is the first Broadway outing for McDonagh since the 2006 transfer of "The Lieutenant of Inishmore." That year, the scribe also picked up an Oscar for his short film "Six Shooter," and earlier this year, he nabbed an original screenplay nom for "In Bruges," the feature he wrote and directed.
The plot of "Behanding" involves a guy on the lookout for his missing appendage, two con artists and a hotel clerk. The story is the first by the Brit writer to be set in America, and will be the first McDonagh play to preem on Broadway.
The production will open March 4 at a theater to be announced. One possible scenario sees "Behanding" opening at the Schoenfeld Theater after the Crowley-helmed "Steady Rain" ends its limited run there Dec. 6.
