Canal Plus Spain, HBO renew pact

'Pacific' toplines package of series, telepics

MADRID -- Spanish premium paybox Canal Plus Spain has taken exclusive rights to a package of series and telepics from HBO, led by the jewel in HBO's 2010 programming crown, WWII epic "The Pacific."

Produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, the 10-seg "Pacific" is skedded to bow in March in the U.S. Canal Plus hasn't announced an airdate.

Canal Plus has also closed on the loser-turns-gigolo comedy "Hung" and the Will Ferrell-produced skein "Eastbound and Down."

Deal includes three of this year's five TV movie Emmy nominees: "Grey Gardens," with Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore; Winston Churchill profile "Into the Storm," with Brendan Gleeson; and "Taking Chance," with Kevin Bacon.

Rounding out the deal are Kenneth Branagh's Japan-set version of William Shakespeare's "As You Like It," Gretchen Mol starrer "The Notorious Bettie Page" and "Katie Morgan's Sex Tips," the porn star's fourth special.

Canal Plus will also broadcast new seasons of "True Blood," "Entourage" and "Big Love."

The HBO-Canal Plus pact renews one of the paybox's most significant product relationships. Aired by Canal Plus, "The Sopranos" achieved cult status in Spain.

"Mad Men," "Damages" and "True Blood" were Canal Plus' flagship series over the 2008-09 season.
