WGA nabs CBS' internet scribes

Guild of West taking on new media writers

The Writers Guild of America West has gained jurisdiction over the 15 Internet writers employed at CBS studios in the Los Angeles area.

The guild said Friday that the scribes had voted unanimously to be repped by the WGA West in a vote conducted by the National Labor Relations Board.

“This is good news for new-media writers,” said WGA West prexy Patric Verrone. “As more and more news, sports and promotional content is distributed on the Internet, it is essential that its writers win respect for their work and all the benefits of a WGA contract.”

The WGA said the next step for the 15 writers is contract negotiations. “We hope to reach a fair deal with CBS as soon as possible,” said guild rep Lynda Whittaker.

The 15 writers are news, promo and sportswriters who create content at KCAL/KCBS, CBS TV City and CBS Radio/KNX for CBS’ various online outlets.
