Virginia Carroll dies at 95

Actress appeared in Gene Autry, Roy Rogers pics

Actress Virginia Carroll, who appeared in numerous Westerns, died of natural causes July 23 in Santa Barbara. She was 95.

Carroll was born in Los Angeles and started as a department store model before landing a part in the 1935 pic "Roberta." She had her first starring role in "A Tenderfoot Goes West" and went on to appear with cowboy stars including Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Johnny Mack Brown in films such as "The Masked Rider" and "Overland Trail." She also appeared on TV shows including "Dragnet," "Leave It To Beaver," "Perry Mason" and "The Roy Rogers Show."

Carroll's first marriage was to actor Ralph Byrd, who played Dick Tracy in early films and on TV. Her brother was L.A. newscaster Frank Carroll, while her second husband Lloyd McLean was a Fox cameraman.

She is survived by a daughter.
