Palmer to lead Doha Tribeca film fest

Palmer will work with Geoffrey Gilmore, Tribeca Enterprises’ chief creative officer, to shape the program at the first edition, which unspools Oct. 29- Nov. 1.
Palmer is head of entertainment at Al-Jazeera English, which is funded by the government of Qatar, and produced and presented its flagship film report “The Fabulous Picture Show,” covering the global film biz.
Arab film expert Mohamed Maklouf will serve as regional programs adviser, and Palestinian filmmaker Scandar Copti is set as community outreach programmer.
Copti and Israeli helmer Yaron Shani co-directed gang drama “Ajami,” which world preemed at Cannes, where it drew a special mention in the Camera d’Or category for debut filmmakers.
Execs from the Qatar Museums Authority, the org dedicated to developing cultural initiatives in the Gulf country, inked a deal to launch the fest last November with Tribeca co-founders Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff.
The fest will include some 30 films, as well as special events.
“Our vision is to create a festival that genuinely engages the Qatari people and supports regional filmmakers,” said Sheikha Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, chair of the Qatar Museums Authority Board of Trustees and daughter of the emir of Qatar.
