McCartney takes show to the streets

New Yorkers get rooftop show pre-Letterman

Paul McCartney posed a question to New Yorkers who rushed outside to see him play atop the Ed Sullivan Theater's marquee on July 15: "Shouldn't you all be at work?"

A reasonable question for Sir Paul, though, might have been: At 67, shouldn't you have stopped working by now?

Nobody, least of all McCartney himself, thinks so.

The former Beatle played an impromptu 22-minute concert in the middle of the day for some 4,000 fans before his appearance on "The Late Show With David Letterman" and three perfs at Citi Field on July 18, 19 and 21.

And promoters, venue owners, and fellow entertainers are all no doubt grateful that McCartney is still playing. The rocker not only filled Citi Field three times, he gave Letterman his largest ratings victory over "The Tonight Show" in quite a while.
