Silverstone takes 'Stand' on B'way

'Clueless' star joins Laura Linney in January

Alicia Silverstone will join Laura Linney in the Broadway cast of Donald Margulies' "Time Stands Still," opening Jan. 28 at Manhattan Theater Club's Samuel J. Friedman Theater following previews that begin Jan. 5.

Returning to the Rialto for the first time since she played Elaine Robinson in "The Graduate" in 2002, Silverstone reprises her role from the world-premiere production of Margulies' play at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles earlier this year. Casting for the two male roles in the four-character drama will be announced in the coming weeks.

In the play about the right to personal happiness in a world of suffering, Linney plays a photojournalist struggling to readjust to domestic life in New York after she and her foreign correspondent partner return from a war zone. Silverstone plays the seemingly superficial girlfriend of the couple's magazine writer friend.

Directed by Daniel Sullivan, "Time Stands Still" is one of two Margulies plays being produced by MTC on Broadway this season.

It will be followed into the Friedman by a revival of the playwright's "Collected Stories," about a celebrated author (to be played by Linda Lavin) and her young protegee. MTC previously produced the drama Off Broadway in 1997; company a.d. Lynne Meadow will direct the new staging.
