Designed for the Nintendo DS handheld, the game's success has doubled sales of the already ubiquitous platform from around 54,000 units the week before the game's release to 127,000.
The game is popular with a wide demo in Japan, from children to the thirtysomethings who cut their teeth on the original "Dragon Quest," developed by game designer Yu Hori and launched in 1986. Including the new numbers for "Dragon Quest IX," the franchise has sold 50 million units.
Nintendo will offer players a new "Dragon Quest IX" adventure weekly via its Wi-Fi service, for a year.
