DreamWorks has tapped Brad Caleb Kane to pen a script based on the nostalgic toy that showed 3-D images from movies and tourist sites.
Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci will produce the pic based on the stereoscopic device, introduced 80 years ago.
The studio had no comment about the project, but it's highly probable the project would be in 3-D since the View-Master was designed to enable viewing of images in three dimensions.
DreamWorks is in talks to acquire the feature rights from toy giant Mattel, which has owned the brand since 1997. View-Master was first unveiled at the 1939 New York World's Fair as an alternative to scenic postcards but began to be marketed as a toy in the 1960s. Kids TV shows and movie properties were often spun off into 3-D scenes for View-Master reels.
Kane, a "Fringe" co-producer and writer, revealed in a recent Twitter posting that the project would resemble 1980s Amblin movies such as "The Goonies" and "Young Sherlock."
Mattel's Barry Waldo and Chris Pardi of Fisher-Price will exec produce "View-Master."
