Wimbledon nabs 50% share for BBC

Federer vs. Roddick final attracts 11 million

The BBC served another ratings ace as its coverage of the Wimbledon tennis tournament men's singles final attracted an average audience of 7.5 million viewers, a 50% share.

The audience shot up to 11.1 million (a 55.9% share) in the last 15 minutes of the marathon four-and-a-half-hour match between the U.S.'s Andy Roddick and Switzerland’s Roger Federer, who claimed his sixth Wimbledon victory.

This was the pubcaster’s highest share for a Wimbledon men's singles final since 2001.

Wimbledon fortnight is one of the BBC’s flagship sports events.

And with a Brit, Andy Murray, making it to the semi-finals of the men's contest, the BBC overall notched up a strong ratings perf at Wimbledon.

This is in marked contrast to its closest rival, ITV, where ratings have plunged to a new all-time low this summer.
