Thompson nabs rights to 'Thunderstorms'

William Boyd novel due out in September

Former BBC Films topper David Thompson has secured the film rights to William Boyd's novel "Ordinary Thunderstorms" ahead of its September publication date.

Thompson will develop the project via his Origin Pictures with BBC Films. Boyd will adapt his own novel, a thriller set against a drug-testing conspiracy in which a man is accused of a crime he didn't commit.

"It's a hugely exciting proposition and very rare to come across a big London-set thriller that is both sophisticated and unpredictable in equal measure," said Thompson.

Boyd has written screenplays for Richard Attenborough's "Chaplin" biopic, starring Robert Downey Jr.; Bruce Beresford's "A Good Man in Africa"; and TV skein "Armadillo." Latter two were adaptations of his novels.
