In previous years, the five-set match — which started at 6.40 p.m. local time — would have been nixed half-way through, as soon as the sun set and poor light halted play, but thanks to the Center Court's new retractable roof and floodlights — which cost the All England Club £80 million ($132 million) to install — the players were able to continue until 10.45 p.m.
Coverage of the match — against Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka — started on BBC Two and then switched over to flagship channel BBC One at 7 p.m., as the pubcaster cleared its schedules for the four-hour contest. Top-ranking soap "EastEnders" was moved to BBC Two and the 10 p.m. news on BBC One was delayed by 45 minutes.
