Sky Saxon, bass guitarist front man and founder of the 60s garage rock band the Seeds, died June 25 in Austin, Texas, following a brief illness, according to publicist Jen Marchand. Having listed his birth date various times everywhere from 1937 to 1946, Saxon's actual age was unknown.

Although Marchand could not confirm the cause of death, it is suspected to be an infection of the internal organs.

Born Richard Marsh in Salt Lake City, Utah, Saxon started as a doo-wop singer and played in several different bands before forming the Seeds in 1965. The band produced a number of hits throughout the mid-60s, including "Can't Seem to Make You Mine" and the national Top 40 hit "Pushin' Too Hard."

More recently he had teamed with the Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan for new recordings, and appeared in the Pumpkins' video for "Superchrist."

Saxon had recently moved to Austin and had begun performing with the band Shapes Have Fangs. He was also planning to perform this summer with the California '66 Revue, a tour composed of California bands from the 60s.
