Though the crowd screamed like '60s-era Beatles fans at the arrival of star
Johnny Depp, it was unmistakably
Michael Mann's film when "Public Enemies" preemed Tuesday at the Village as part of the L.A. Film Festival.
"The film is a symbiosis of so many things Michael Mann has done in his career," said producer
Kevin Misher. "Crime in America; a classic Chicago story; and a sense of style that brings you into a specific time and place."
After-party was at the Hammer Museum, where U co-topper
Marc Shmuger praised Mann for "still making movies that have impact and style."

Adam Fogelson said the pic stands out in the marketplace, since it has "meat on the bone. There's some depth to the characters. After two months of cotton candy, audiences are ready for some protein."
