Pic also nabbed the fest's prize for best storytelling in a documentary film.
Documentary, which bowed at Sundance in January, concerns a quest to uncover the slaughter of dolphins in a hidden cove in Japan. Roadside Attractions will release the pic on July 31.
Showtime's Tony Cox Award for screenwriting was presented to Mark Boal for "The Hurt Locker," which Summit opens in theaters this week.
Cherien Dabis ("Amreeka") received the third annual Adrienne Shelly Excellence in Filmmaking Award, a cash prize awarded to a female filmmaker in honor of the late director.
Winning the fest's Tony Cox Screenplay Competition, recognizing an emerging screenwriter, was Jenny Deller for "Future Weather." Scribe Jessie Nelson and thesps Fisher Stevens and Lili Taylor judged the competition.
Aud nod for short film went to "Abuelo," helmed by choreographer Mary Ann Kellogg. Adam Leon and Jack Pettibone Riccobono drew the short screenwriting prize for "Killer."
Teen View on NFF Award went to short "Charlie Thistle," helmed by Bragi Schut Jr.
The economy didn't dampen attendance at the four-day event, said Nantucket exec director Colin Stanfield. "At the end of our first full festival day, we had already matched last year's box office," he said.
Fest, which is focused on screenwriting, also held a tribute for Harold Ramis; a comedy roundtable with Ben Stiller, Ramis, Peter Farrelly and Jon Hamburg; signature event Late Night Storytelling, hosted by Farrelly and Anne Meara; and a 25th anni screening of "Ghostbusters."
Event closed with a screening of "Year One."
