'Memphis' set for Broadway run

Musical set for fall at La Jolla Playhouse

Musical “Memphis” has officially confirmed it will begin a fall run at Broadway’s Shubert Theater, following a group sales notice last month that let the cat out of the bag.

Tuner, which bowed at La Jolla Playhouse in 2008 and played Seattle earlier this year, will arrive on the Rialto with its creative team intact. Helmer Christopher Ashley and choreographer Sergio Trujillo will work with a design team that includes David Gallo (sets), Paul Tazewell (costumes), Howell Binkley (lights) and Ken Travis (sound).

Show, with music and lyrics by Bon Jovi’s David Bryan and book by Joe DiPietro, is a fictionalized account of one of the first white DJs to play African-American music on the radio in the 1950s.

Junkyard Dog Prods., Barbara and Buddy Freitag, and Kenny and Marleen Alhadeff lead the list of producers. “Memphis” begins previews Sept. 23 ahead of an Oct. 19 opening.
