He will take over from current chair Stewart Till on July 30 for a four-year term. The appointment had been expected for some time among Brit film industry circles.
The high-profile appointment of Bevan, who is part of the British film industry's most successful producing team along with Working Title partner Eric Fellner, is a boost for the U.K. Film Council as it prepares for a funding review in 2010.
"Tim is one of the U.K.'s most successful producers with a hugely impressive list of credits to his name," said Ben Bradshaw, the U.K. government's culture minister.
"British film is enjoying great critical and commercial success, but at the same time everyone is facing the transition to a new digital era, the very real challenges of the credit crisis and the impact of online piracy," said Bevan. "We must adapt and consolidate to respond to those new realities, working with government, listening to our stakeholders, and carrying out a comprehensive review of all our activities, both industrial and cultural."
