The WGA East made the disclosure Monday as part of its announcement of candidates for its officer and council slots. Results will be announced following a Sept. 17 membership meeting.
Winship, senior writer at "Bill Moyers Journal," won a two-year term in September 2007 over Tom Philipps and became part of the WGA's negotiating team about a month before the guild launched its 100-day strike against the congloms. He was highly visible during the WGA East's strike activities in New York and Washington D.C. and has remained unapologetic about the work stoppage -- and the WGA's decision to strike when its contract expired rather than wait for SAG's contract to run out eight months later.
"I don't think there's any doubt that we made the right decision to go out when we did, although only after all other options were exhausted," Winship said earlier this year.
Other candidates include incumbent VP Bob Schneider, who faces challenges from Philipps and Ambrose J. Raftery. Incumbent Gail Lee is running unopposed for secretary-treasurer.
The 13 candidates for the six open freelance seats are Susane Lee, Thomas Kelly, Susan Kim, Adam Brooks, Courtney Simon, Julian Sheppard, Austin Chick, Tim Carvell, Melissa Salmons, Henry Bean, Bobby Spillane, Pippin Parker and Richard Vetere. Kim, Salmons, Parker, Carvell, Brooks and Simon are incumbents.
The five candidates for the three open staff seats are Sue Brown, Duane Tollison, Angela Perdos, Phil Pilato and Andy Meppen. Brown, Pilato and Tollison are the incumbents.
Winship said Monday, "I look forward to continue working with our leadership and everyone here, as well as our colleagues in the West, to insure a creative, prosperous and secure future for all our members."
