Gerald J. Harman Jr. dies

Exec was director financial planning at NBC Television

Gerald J. Harman Jr., longtime director of financial planning for NBC Television on the West Coast, died May 18 in Los Angeles of complications from lung cancer. 

Signing on with NBC in 1957 as one of the network's financial mavens, Harman left 23 years later in 1980 to pursue a second career as an investment counselor.

At the Peacock, he created a planning manual for the department and made recommendations on the web's day-to-day spending policy.

Born and raised in Beverly Hills, Harman Jr. began his showbiz career in exhibition for the Fox West Coast Theaters' circuit, serving as assistant manager of the Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills and the Fox Los Angeles in Downtown L.A. 

He served five years in the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of full commander in the Naval Reserve.

Harman graduated from Loyola U. and received a master's degree in business from USC.

He is survived by a sister.
