As a boy growing up in London, Ontario, he was regularly taken by his mom to the Shakespeare festival in Stratford. "There was something about it that called me," Garber says.
These days, the thesp rotates among television, film and theater. In the past couple of years, he was a regular on ABC's "Eli Stone," appeared in the acclaimed pic "Milk" and was on the Boston stage in Noel Coward's "Present Laughter," a play he'll be returning to this winter in a Broadway revival.
Garber has six Emmy noms (three for "Alias") and four Tony nods. At the Banff TV fest, he's set to receive the Cineflix Award of Excellence for his entire body of work. "Victor kind of personifies Canada: He's resource rich and internationally respected," says Peter Vamos, the event's exec director.
Garber doesn't have a long-range acting game plan, he says, because too often they don't work out. Instead, his focus is more near-term.
"I look forward to the next script that comes along and I'll think about whether it makes sense (for me to do). I have found something rewarding in everything that I've done."
