Cameron inks with the agency as he returns to dramatic filmmaking with the 3-D sci-fi actioner "Avatar" for 20th Century Fox. It's his first feature in 12 years, since the Oscar-winning "Titanic," still the biggest grosser of all time.
Since "Titanic," Cameron has co-directed the documentaries "Aliens of the Deep," "Ghosts of the Abyss" and "Expedition: Bismarck" and exec produced the TV series "Dark Angel," among other projects. He's also been active in the development of the proprietary 3-D production technology that factors into "Avatar" and other projects on which he's working.
One of them, "Sanctum," was packaged and is being sold by CAA. John Garvin wrote the film. Cameron is producing the Alister Grierson-directed live-action 3-D adventure about a deep-sea diving team headed by a father and son who encounter a life-threatening crisis when the team heads to uncharted depths. Cameron had been in negotiations to set up the project at Rogue Pictures (Daily Variety, Oct. 12, 2006), but that deal never closed.
Cameron hasn't fixed on his next directing effort, but the film projects "Battle Angel" and "Dive" are candidates at Fox.
Cameron will continue with his attorney, Hillary Bibicoff at Greenberg Glusker.
