Grammys drop polka album award

Folk/Americana category split into two

The Recording Academy will reduce by one the number of Grammys handed out in January.

The polka album nod has been eliminated. In addition, the Recording Academy split contemporary folk/Americana into two categories, contemporary folk album and Americana album, while Latin urban album will merge with Latin rock or alternative into a Latin rock, alternative or urban album category.

When all is said and done, the total number of gold-plated trophies to be handed out Jan. 31 will be 109.

Meanwhile, at the Recording Acad's annual spring trustees confab, musicvid director-producer George Flanigen was elected chair of the board of trustees, music supervisor-composer-film music exec Doug Frank was elected vice chair, and engineer-producer Glenn Lorbecki was elected secretary-treasurer. Previous chairman of the board Jimmy Jam takes on the title chair emeritus.
