Zhang Yimou to stage 'Turandot'

Opera will mark 60th anniversary of PRC

BEIJING — Top Chinese helmer Zhang Yimou is staging the opera "Turandot" in the Bird's Nest stadium in Beijing as part of celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the People's Republic of China.

Entertainment group Ticketmaster announced that Zhang would stage the Puccini opera for two nights at the iconic stadium,. The venue hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics, which Zhang orchestrated.

He first directed the Chinese version of the opera in 1998 when it was staged at the Forbidden City and it is widely regarded as the director's masterpiece. The opera will be supported by the Beijing Performance & Arts Group Co., which in addition to staging last year's acclaimed Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, worked closely with Zhang to bring his first production of "Turandot" to life.
