German actress Monica Bleibtreu dies

Veteran thesp played a part in 'Run Lola Run'

Monica Bleibtreu, an actress well-known in the German-speaking world for a prolific range of cinema, television and theater roles, has died, her agents said Friday. She was 65.

The Players agency said Bleibtreu died early Thursday in Hamburg after a long battle with cancer.

Bleibtreu was born in the Austrian capital, Vienna, on May 4, 1944.

She made her cinema debut in "Ludwig -- Requiem for a Virgin King" in 1972.

Later roles included appearances in Tom Tykwer's "Run Lola Run," which also starred her son, German actor Moritz Bleibtreu; German TV biodrama "The Manns -- Novel of a Century;" and in this year's "Knef," a biography of actress and singer Hildegard Knef.

President Horst Koehler said he was "dismayed" by her death, writing in a message of condolences to her son that "she enthused countless people."

Funeral were not immediately available.
