Watkins wrote the 1927 play “Chicago,” on which the Kander & Ebb tuner was based. Also written in the late 1920s, “So Help Me God!” details the backstage intrigue swirling around a legit diva (Johnston) and her striving understudy.
Martin Platt helms the Mint reading, with a cast that also includes Roderick Hill, Catherine Curtin, Sheffield Chastain and Jeff Steitzer, among others.
Reading is set for June 8 at the Lucille Lortel Theater.
