Genre Co.'s Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten are also onboard to produce alongside Brett Ratner and Jay Stern via their Rat Entertainment banner. Carl Mazzocone is also producing.
Story follows a family of villains, led by a sadistic mother, who return to their former home and terrorize the new owners and their guests. Scott Milam penned the script.
Bousman, who directed the second, third and fourth "Saw" films as well as the rock opera "Repo!," saw the original pic when he was a kid, and it left a lasting impression.
"It's a wild, crazy, insane, macabre ride, and that's what's so exciting about this project," he said.
Chicago-based film company LightTower Entertainment is financing "Mother's Day."
LightTower's Jonathan Zucker and Curtis Leopardo are exec producing. Charles Kaufman, director of the original, and Lloyd Kaufman, co-founder of Troma, will also exec produce along with Genre Co.'s Stephen Kessler.
Project will mark Bousman's fifth film for Twisted, the horror film division of Evolution Entertainment. "Mother's Day" also marks a third pairing for LightTower and Twisted Pictures. The two companies teamed on the recently shot "The Tortured," starring Jesse Metcalf and Erika Christensen, and "Kept," which is in development.
The filmmakers are eyeing a summer start date for a release timed to Mother's Day 2010.
