The production company is developing a show around Larry Ramos Gomez, a 31-year-old man who has earned notoriety for his densely thick hair-covered face.
Gomez and his brother suffer from hypertrichosis, also known as the "wolfman syndrome." Both have performed for circuses in Mexico, their home country. Gomez has also appeared on talkshows such as "Maury Povich," as well as on "Ripley's Believe It or Not" and in the low-rent movie "Freakshow."
"After reading an article about him, we tracked him down and were really fascinated by his outlook on life," said Zoo's John Stevens. "The idea is to document his search to get out of the freak factor category and to try and get people to look at him as a normal guy."
Gomez is divorced but has a child from that marriage. Stevens said the idea for the dating show came out of Gomez's desire to pick himself up from that split -- and the fact that, given his condition, it's not that easy to find love.
Zoo is still kicking around the format for the show, and how it evolves depends on the network that picks it up. But for now, the Zoo team is traveling to New York next week to pitch Gomez as the star of a docusoap (much in the vein of TLC's "Little People, Big World").
"It's like the real-life 'Beauty and the Beast,' " said Zoo's Barry Poznick. "He's a cool guy, and in a weird way very handsome. He's good with the ladies."
"Maury" alum Amy Rosenblum, who developed a friendship with Gomez thanks to his appearance on that gabber, is onboard to exec produce, alongside Poznick and Stevens. Charles Steenveld is also an exec producer, while Chuck Harris is co-exec producer.
