Toronto festival gets financial boost

Government gives event $2.5 million grant

The Toronto Film Festival is to get C$3 million ($2.5 million) from the Canadian federal government to boost its national and international audiences.

The grant, part of the feds' new two-year $82 million tourism events program, was announced Tuesday by Peter Kent, minister of state of foreign affairs (Americas) at a press conference.

"This funding will allow us to improve the customer experience and promote the rich culture of our host city, all while showcasing the importance of film," said fest co-director Cameron Bailey.

Event director and CEO Piers Handling assured that the 34th edition of the fest, which will run Sept. 10-19, would not cut back on programming quality or number of titles despite the recession.

The fest, which attracts 300,000 visitors and 1,000 international media, has already earmarked the cash to diversify programming, sustain international delegate attendance and increase awareness on the global scene.
