Toho pulls 'Ballad' promo after arrest

Pic's star Kusanagi jailed for indecent exposure

TOKYO -- Distrib Toho has suspended its promotional campaign for romance "Ballad -- Na no naki koi no uta" (Ballad -- Song of Love Without a Name) after its star, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, was arrested on Thursday for indecent exposure.

Kusanagi, a member of the pop group Smap and a major TV and movie celebrity, was discovered by police cavorting naked in central Tokyo's Hinokicho Park after drinking heavily at a pub.

The singer/actor was taken into custody but later released. On Friday he appeared at a press conference at which he apologized for his behavior and vowed to reform.

Although Toho pulled its "Ballad" campaign, including the screening of trailers and the distribution of posters, fliers and other PR material, pic will still be released in September.

"Ballad" is helmed by Takashi Yamazaki.

Kusanagi and Smap band members have been omnipresent on Japanese TV for nearly two decades, appearing on and hosting dozens of TV shows and appearing as the faces of numerous ad campaigns. Advertisers, including Toyota and Proctor & Gamble, have already cancelled TV adverts featuring Kusanagi.

Kusanagi's agency, Johnny & Associates, has yet to reveal whether he will take a "rest" from showbiz -- the standard self-imposed punishment for scandal-hit Japanese talent.
