DD chief exec Cliff Plumer told Daily Variety that the position is needed to ensure smooth cooperation between filmmakers and the software department that creates the tools required for cutting-edge vfx.
"It was easier when we were working on one large complex show and maybe smaller ones, but now that we have multiple large, complex shows, it's important to have that collaboration," said Plumer, who had a similar job at Industrial Light & Magic before joining Venice, Calif.-based Digital Domain.
DD's current slate includes "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," "2012," Disney's 3-D "Tron" sequel and "Percy Jackson."
Beier has 25 years of experience in visual effects, including a dozen films for which he was a vfx supervisor. He is a co-founder of Hammerhead Prods., where he has been company programmer and tool builder.
He received a Technical Achievement Award at the Scientific & Technical Academy Awards in 1999 for software he created for Hammerhead.
