Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield already boarded the Mark Romanek-helmed pic, which is based on a 2005 Kazuo Ishiguro novel. Nathalie Richard and Andrea Riseborough round out the cast.
Lensing began Tuesday in the U.K.
Alex Garland ("28 Days Later") adapted the screenplay, which revolves around a trio (Knightley, Mulligan and Garfield) who, as children, spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. As they grow into young adults, they find that they have to prepare themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them.
Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich are producing for DNA Films, where the project was developed. Romanek and Garland are exec producing.
Rampling recently played Lady Spencer opposite Knightley in period drama "The Duchess."
Hawkins drew critical raves for her comedic turn in Mike Leigh's "Happy-Go-Lucky."
