Not only did the pic's opening day outstrip the $8.7 million first day of last year's "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour," "Hannah Montana: The Movie" also posted an all-time record for a G-rated live action opener, inching out the $17 million earned by the Mouse House's "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" last fall on its first Friday. "Hannah Montana: The Movie" was released in 3,118 theaters yesterday.
"Hannah Montana: The Movie" also charted the second best Friday bow for a pic unspooling during the Easter frame, ranking behind 2006's "Scary Movie 4" ($19 million). In addition, the Disney pic was the second-highest opening for a family film (PG or G-rated) prior to the summer sesh, besting the first Friday of Paramount-DreamWorks' "Monsters vs. Aliens" ($16.8 million) and slotting behind Fox's 2006 toon "Ice Age: The Meltdown" ($21.8 million).
Meanwhile, "Fast & Furious" is on the verge of becoming the fifth 2009 release to clock past the century mark this year at the domestic B.O. At this point in time a year ago, the only frosh release to generate more than $100 million was Fox's "Horton Hears a Who!"
In its eighth day of release, "Fast & Furious" placed second with $10.6 million off 3,472, down 65% for a current domestic take of $99.9 million.
Paramount's DreamWorks Animation release "Monsters vs. Aliens" ranked third with $9.1 million off 4,136, rising 4% in its third Friday for a total B.O. of $127.5 million. Distrib added 27 engagements to its theater count from last Friday.
Warner Bros.' R-rated comedy "Observe and Report" starring Seth Rogen, Anna Faris and Ray Liotta drew $4.7 million from 2,727 for fourth yesterday.
Summit Entertainment's "Knowing" took fifth with $2.4 million, down 14% on 2,925 in its fourth Friday with a domestic cume of $63.7 million.
Twentieth Century Fox's "Dragonball Evolution" headlining Chow Yun-Fat and Emmy Rossum was the day's third wide release. Pic opened in eighth place, collecting $2.1 million off 2,181.
