Nichols, a Grammy-nommed singer whose songs include "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off," has been talking up his role on red carpets. His deal is expected to be finalized soon.
Nichols will appear in the show as Rusty, a country music star who suddenly decides to chuck his career and return home. Show is based on the 1992 pic of the same name.
Peter Masterson ("The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas") will helm and co-write the book with "Pure Country" screenwriter Rex McGee. Music is by Steve Dorff with lyrics by John Bettis.
Design team includes Derek McLane (sets), Ann Roth (costumes), Kevin Adams (lights) and Acme Sound Partners (sound), with choreography by Sean Curran.
Randall L. Wreghitt, Chris Presley and Ellen Rusconi produce the show, which targets an early 2010 opening on Broadway.
