According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, the hourlong "American Idol" results show averaged a 7.8 rating/20 share in adults 18-49 and 22.4 million viewers overall -- more than double the demo delivery of any other program in the 9 o'clock hour. Kicking off the night, drama "Lie to Me" was on the low side but still led its hour (2.5/8 in 18-49, 8.4 million viewers overall).
CBS moved up to second place on the night, as "The New Adventures of Old Christine" (2.1/7 in 18-49, 7.3 million viewers overall) and "Gary Unmarried" (2.2/7 in 18-49, 7.3 million viewers overall) were in line with their season averages to finish not too far behind "Lie to Me." The net rose at 9 with "Criminal Minds" (3.2/8 in 18-49, 13.3 million viewers overall), which placed second or third in most categories, and then prevailed at 10 p.m. with "CSI: NY" (3.3/9 in 18-49, 12.5 million viewers overall).
At ABC, "Scrubs" (1.8/6 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall) and "Better Off Ted" (1.7/5 in 18-49, 4.2 million viewers overall) continue to struggle, leading into firstrun series lows for "Lost" (roughly 3.8/9 in 18-49, 8.4 million viewers overall from 9 to 10:02 p.m.). And new comedic cop drama "The Unusuals" failed to wow in its premiere (roughly 2.2/6 in 18-49, 6.6 million viewers overall), though it fared a bit better than episodes of "Life on Mars" in the timeslot for ABC.
NBC ran fifth among the broadcasters in 18-49 and barely edged past sixth-place CW with a lineup of "Law & Order" repeats at 8 p.m. (1.2/4 in 18-49, 5.4 million viewers overall) and 10 p.m. (1.2/3 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall), sandwiched by the finale of "Life" at 9 (1.3/3 in 18-49, 4.5 million viewers overall).
At CW, "America's Next Top Model" (1.7/5 in 18-49, 3.7 million viewers overall) was down slightly week to week but finished a tick behind Fox for the hour's lead in adults 18-34 (1.9/6) while winning the timeslot among women 18-34 (2.7/9).
Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 5.2/14; CBS, 2.9/8; ABC, 2.6/7; Univision, 1.8/5; CW, 1.3/4; NBC, 1.2/3.
In total viewers: Fox, 15.4 million; CBS, 11.0 million; ABC, 6.5 million; NBC, 4.9 million; Univision, 4.5 million; CW, 2.9 million.
