Mafia pics fight for Italo awards

'II Divo,' 'Gomorrah' up for Donatello honors

MILAN -- Paolo Sorrentino's lauded political drama "Il Divo" and Matteo Garrone's gritty mafia pic "Gomorrah" have emerged as the front runners in Italy's David di Donatello film awards this year.

"Il Divo," which dramatizes the life and career of Giulio Andreotti, the notoriously Machiavellian seven-time Italian Prime Minister, has scooped 16 nominations.

The look at the life and career of the mafia-tainted pol known as "Beelzebub," is up for most of the major prizes, including film, director and screenplay and actor (Toni Servillo).

At the other end of the food chain in Italo organized crime, "Gomorrah," a harrowing look at the Camorra criminal gangs of Naples, gets 11 nominations, including film, director and screenplay.

Both films won prizes at Cannes.

The Davids will be announced May 8.
