Thesp, who appeared last season on the Main Stem in "November," will play the mother, Kate, in Simon's autobiographical plays, two of a trilogy that includes "Biloxi Blues."
"Brighton Beach," which ran on the Rialto for three years beginning in 1983, and "Broadway Bound," which played for about two years starting in 1986, both take place in the Brooklyn home of young protag Eugene, a stand-in for Simon. Elizabeth Franz originated the role of Kate in "Brighton," while Linda Lavin picked up a Tony for her turn in the same part in "Broadway."
Casting of Eugene has not yet been nailed down. Matthew Broderick and Jonathan Silverman played the part in "Brighton" and "Broadway," respectively.
The new staging of "Brighton Beach" aims to open in October with perfs of "Broadway" incorporated into the playing sked a couple of months later. Exact dates and theater (a Nederlander house) remain to be announced for the productions, both helmed by David Cromer.
