BRUSSELS -- MTV channels across Europe will be urging young people to turn out for elections to the European Parliament this summer.
The campaign is part of a 1.9 million ($2.5 million) deal with the European Commission, announced Wednesday.
The aim is to raise the turn-out rate among 18-24 year-olds from the 40% registered in 2004.
Three spots will screen on MTV in all 27 EU states during April, featuring young people hanging up loudspeakers in London, Paris and Rome. A website will allow people to express their views on European issues.
The campaign peaks on April 30 with a Europe-wide "sound wave," with young people in Berlin, Milan, Prague and other cities invited to shout the slogan "Can you hear me Europe?" simultaneously.
