Reed Business on Monday confirmed executive changes at
Variety, with Peter Bart assuming a new role as vice president and editorial director.
The official announcement from Reed Business CEO Tad Smith followed the story posted
Sunday evening by variety.com, followed by a flurry of Internet postings.
Bart will report directly to Smith, assisting him in furthering
Variety's editorial mission in print and online and expanding the brand's position in new revenue streams.
Bart also will continue to contribute his weekly column as well as his blog and serve as
Variety's ambassador in public venues, on television, on the Web and at industry events.
"Bart has managed
Variety's staff and news operations for 20 years and we have long had an agreement in place that, at the 20-year mark, he would move onto new responsibilities," Smith said. "With this in mind, Tim Gray was named editor several years ago."
Gray,
Variety's editor, now assumes responsibility for the news operation, reporting to Neil Stiles, president of
Variety.
"Tim is a truly gifted and experienced editor and richly deserves this promotion," Bart said. "He is fortunate in being able to serve under the talented stewardship of Neil Stiles, an executive with a lifetime commitment to editorial excellence."
Stiles said, "I am looking forward to taking advantage of Peter's extra bandwidth as we pursue many new and diverse business opportunities."
The changes at
Variety are effective immediately.
