BSkyB claims first with live 3-D TV

British satcaster airs Keane concert in HD

LONDON -- British satcaster BSkyB notched up another U.K. first on Thursday after broadcasting a live concert by rock act Keane in 3-D to a domestic 3-D TV set.

The live performance was transmitted using BSkyB's satellite network and existing Sky Plus HD set-top boxes.

A specially invited audience watched the transmission on a 46-inch HD screen at north London's iconic Abbey Road studios next door to the live gig.

"Being able to broadcast a live event in 3-D is a real breakthrough as previous demonstrations have relied on recorded material," said BSkyB's director of strategic product development Gerry O'Sullivan.

"This is the first time we've broadcast a live event in 3-D over satellite and it shows the significant progress we're making with our research and development activity.

BSkyB, which has pioneered technological innovations like the Sky Plus hard disk video recorder and HD channels in the U.K., last year demonstrated 3-D using recorded material including a soccer match and Sky One show "Gladiators."

"We are continuing to talk to different partners and content owners to find out how far we can take this technology and, most importantly, whether there is future consumer demand for 3-D TV services," O'Sullivan said.
