If it hadn't been for son Colin, Tom Hanks would never have known about "The Great Buck Howard."

After reading writer-director Sean McGinly's script, the younger Hanks took it to his father's production company -- Playtone Prods., which ended up producing with Bristol Bay Prods.

"If it's good stuff, I take work from anybody, including relatives. But it's got to be good work," Hanks pere said at Tuesday's Tribeca Grand premiere.

Pic, about a once-famous mentalist and his assistant, drew a star-studded crowd including Jane Fonda, Dick Cavett, Blythe Danner, Debra Winger and Valentino.

After the screening at the Soho Grand, McGinly admitted that he was initially nervous about working with John Malkovich, who plays Howard.

"Someone warned me that he was an intimidating presence," helmer said. "They said, 'He'll eat you alive,' and then he showed up and he was the nicest guy. I was surprised."
