According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, "American Idol" averaged a 9.2 rating/24 share in adults 18-49 and 25.2 million viewers overall from 8 to 10 p.m., peaking in the 9:30 p.m. half-hour with a 10.1/25 in the demo and more than 27 million viewers overall. Still, it was down about 15% year-to-year.
NBC's "Biggest Loser" (3.8/10 in 18-49, 9.3 million viewers overall) was a clear No. 2 in demos from 8 to 10 p.m., notching the net's best-ever series performance opposite a two-hour episode of "American Idol" and improving upon its performance on the comparable night a year ago by more than 25%; rising with each half-hour, "Loser" peaked at 9:30 with a 4.4/11 in 18-49. The Peacock net then moved to first place at 10 p.m. with an original episode of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (3.6/10 in 18-49, 11.0 million viewers overall), drawing the show's largest overall audience of the season.
Elsewhere, CBS ran third in demos with repeats of crime dramas "NCIS" (2.7/8 in 18-49, 13.3 million viewers overall), "The Mentalist" (2.8/7 in 18-49, 14.2 million viewers overall) and "Without a Trace" (2.1/6 in 18-49, 10.2 million viewers overall). And ABC struggled with "Homeland Security" (1.4/4 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall) and repeats of "Scrubs" (1.1/3 in 18-49, 2.9 million viewers overall) before coming to life some at 10 o'clock with newsmag "Primetime: What Would You Do?" (1.9/5 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall).
