Mexican conglom Televisa brought the skein -- based on the original Colombian version titled "Betty la fea" -- to China last year through a strategic partnership, enabling them to work around stringent national production rules to gain full access to the nation's billion-plus population.
In the period since it began, "Chou nu wu di" has become the No. 2 fiction program in primetime, according to Televisa.
The world's largest producer of Spanish-language content is looking forward to using the same strategic alliance platform with Chinese broadcasters to produce a version of successful telenovela "Las tontas no van al cielo" (Dumb Girls Don't Go to Heaven).
Some 19 nations now boast some version of "Ugly Betty," and many others rerun dubbed versions.
