The "Joan" producers sued Willis and his production company in Los Angeles for $4 million Feb. 27, alleging breach of contract on the film, which Willis was to topline and direct. That suit claimed Willis quit as director without notice, in violation of his contract.
In the cross-complaint, filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Willis seeks $8.7 million in compensatory damages against Moshe Diamant, Mark Damon, Foresight Unlimited, Signature Entertainment Group, Three Stories Prods. and 20 other parties.
Willis alleges that he had been assured by Diamant that the producers would provide a commitment letter confirming they had obtained $20 million in financing 30 days before the start of the movie shoot, and that they would deposit Willis' acting fee in escrow at least seven days before lensing was to begin.
Willis further alleges that Diamant admitted, on the eve of the start of production, that the financing was not in place, and that Willis, producers Stephen Eads and David Willis and many members of the cast and crew had spent more than five weeks working on pre-production at that point.
