After putting a fresh directorial stamp on two American classics this season with lauded productions of “The Glass Menagerie” and “Our Town,” fast-rising Chicago helmer David Cromer will return to the Tennessee Williams canon next season with a staging of “A Streetcar Named Desire” for the Writers’ Theater in Glencoe, Ill.
Also included on the company’s 2009-10 slate is Michael Halberstam’s revival of Tom Stoppard’s “Rosencrantz and Guildernstern are Dead”; Noel Coward musical revue, “Oh Coward!,” staged by Jim Corti; and Ron OJ Parson directing John Henry Redwood’s “The Old Settler.”
Cromer had a critical hit last season at the Writers’ Theater with William Inge’s “Picnic.” His production of “Streetcar” will run May 4-July 11, 2010. Cromer’s austere interpretation of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” opened Off Broadway Feb. 26 to mostly rave reviews.
Next up this season at the Writers’ Theater is the world premiere of “A Minister’s Wife,” a new musical adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s “Candida” by Austin Pendleton, lyricist Jan Tranen and composer Joshua Schmidt, who scored major attention in Chicago and Off Broadway last season with “Adding Machine.” Staged by Writers’ Theater a.d. Halberstam, the new show runs May 19-July 19.
