Tyros take up Cannes' Residence

Young filmmakers selected for event

MADRID  -- Guatemalan Julio Hernandez Cordon ("Gasolina") and Chile's Esteban Larrain ("Alice in the Land") are among six young filmmakers selected for the Cannes Festival's 18th Cinefondation Residence.

The twice-yearly Residence, established by Cannes topper Gilles Jacob in 2000, started Sunday and runs until July 15.

Paris-based, it aims to help first- and second-time feature helmers prepare the screenplay and production for their next movies.

Hernandez Cordon, whose "Gasolina" won San Sebastian's 2008 Horizontes Latinos, is writing another Latin-American youth drama, "Dust," about two young men fleeing misfortune and mothers.

Larrain, whose Andes odyssey pic "Alice in the Land" won a Locarno special jury prize, is prepping "La Virgen de Penablanca," about a Virgin cult in Augusto Pinochet's Chile.

Also selected by Jacob and a jury, Israeli first-timer Yael Gidron's "Nature Film," about military discipline, is a feature-length version of her multi-prized short.

Polish helmer Rafael Kapelinski's "Up on the Roof" is a Dublin-set comedy; "The Revenant" is an identity theft drama from Germany's Andreas Bolm, whose short, Java," screened in Cannes at the Cinefondation's student-film Selection showcase.

"Feed Me With Your Words," from Slovenia's Martin Turk, is a three-part family drama portraying mental illness.
