“The Dark Knight” scored twice Saturday at the 56th annual Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards, picking up kudos in both music and sound effects editing categories.
Nods were handed out at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles.
Ben Burtt, the man behind the sounds of R2-D2, Chewbacca and Wall-E, also took home double kudos. He won the animated feature category for “Wall-E” moments before being honored with the org’s career achievement nod.
“This is fantastic, but it’s not all about me,” Burtt said.
George Lucas presented Burtt with the career achievement honor. Lucas, whose Skywalker Sound won animated TV series for “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” played to the crowd, saying, “As most of you know, I’m a strong advocate of hiring the sound people first.”
“This is the only crowd where something like that can be appreciated,” he added.
The night’s other top prizes went to “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Mamma Mia!” and “Slumdog Millionaire,” which continued its winning streak with the kudo for sound editing in a foreign film.
“Slumdog” helmer Danny Boyle was even on hand to present two awards. He praised the work of sound editors saying, “Without sound there’s no light.”
On the TV side, “CSI: Miami” nabbed top kudos in the shortform music category, while “Lost” won for dialogue and “Battlestar Galactica” for sound effects editing.
Longform TV kudos went to “Celine,” “Generation Kill” and “Crusoe.”
